Four operators, one useful mental map

Inside the city, the STIB/MIVB runs the metro, tram and bus network. The national rail operator SNCB/NMBS links Brussels stations by train; De Lijn connects the city with Flanders, and TEC serves connections towards Wallonia. Their networks overlap, but a ticket valid on one operator is not automatically valid on every other one (Brussels-Capital Region).

As a newcomer, start by planning the whole trip rather than just looking at a metro map. The STIB app can combine metro, tram, bus and train options, show scheduled and live information across operators, and compare faster routes with options involving fewer connections or less walking.

For occasional city trips: tap to pay or use the STIB app

If you are travelling only on STIB, a contactless bank card, phone or smartwatch is a straightforward option: STIB accepts it at metro stations and on buses and trams. The same card or device must be tapped again at each connection; connections made within 60 minutes are covered by the same fare, and STIB currently lists a daily maximum. The fare and daily cap can change, so check the official contactless-payment page before relying on a particular price. One card or device cannot validate multiple passengers, so each traveller needs their own payment method.

Alternatively, buy a digital ticket in the STIB app and activate it before boarding or entering a metro station. If travelling together, the app requires a separate activated trip for each person. A digital STIB ticket is not the same as a cross-operator Brupass, so check the product and route before travelling outside the STIB network (STIB ticket and fare guidance).

When MOBIB is useful

MOBIB is a reusable smart card that stores tickets or season tickets; it is not itself a ticket. STIB says a card costs €6 and is valid for five years. A personal card is named and can hold season tickets; an anonymous MOBIB Basic can be lent to another person and holds tickets only. You can buy a card at a STIB BOOTIK, while MOBIB Basic is also sold at KIOSKs and GO vending machines. Load your ticket first, then validate it at the red reader when boarding or entering the metro; validate again when changing vehicles (STIB's MOBIB guide).

A MOBIB card can hold tickets from several Belgian operators, but the ticket product still determines where you can travel. For occasional trips on STIB alone, using a contactless card or the app may mean you do not need to buy MOBIB immediately. If you will commute regularly or use several operators, compare the relevant ticket or subscription before choosing a card.

Brupass or Brupass XL for trips across operators

Brupass is designed for travel around the Brussels-Capital Region on the whole STIB network and specified SNCB, TEC and De Lijn services. Brupass XL extends the area into some surrounding municipalities. The precise stops and limits vary by operator, so use the official network maps and confirm both your origin and destination before you buy (STIB's Brupass and Brupass XL explanation).

These products make sense to compare if your commute crosses an operator boundary—for example, if you live outside the Region or your route combines an SNCB train with STIB. Do not assume every ticket is valid for every part of the journey: check which Brupass zone applies, which operator runs each leg and whether the ticket needs to be loaded on MOBIB or activated in the app.

Taking the train to or from Brussels Airport

The SNCB station at Brussels Airport-Zaventem is beneath the airport departures and arrivals hall. Keep your train ticket barcode or MOBIB card handy for the station gates. SNCB says a Brussels Airport Supplement is included in most tickets; where it is not, the current fee and the tickets that need it are set out on its airport travel page.

There is an important Brussels-bus exception: Brupass and Brupass XL are not valid on STIB line 12 when departing from Brussels Airport. STIB says to use an Airport2City ticket for that bus. If you take the train instead, buy the appropriate SNCB ticket and check whether its Airport Supplement is included (STIB Brupass guidance).

A simple first-week routine

  1. Save the STIB journey planner and check live departures and disruptions when you travel.
  2. For an occasional journey on STIB only, use contactless payment or an STIB app ticket; validate each connection using the same card or device.
  3. If you will travel frequently or use several operators, compare MOBIB, season tickets and Brupass options against your actual commute.
  4. Before crossing the Region or travelling to the airport, confirm the fare product covers that operator, stop and route; validate at each required boarding or station entry.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my contactless bank card on all Brussels public transport?

STIB accepts contactless bank cards and compatible phones or watches on its metro, tram and bus network. That contactless fare is for STIB journeys; use the ticket product and operator rules that match your route if you travel on SNCB, De Lijn or TEC.

Do I need a MOBIB card to travel in Brussels?

No. For occasional STIB trips you can use contactless payment or a digital ticket in the STIB app. MOBIB is a reusable card that holds tickets or season tickets and can be useful if you travel regularly or need a multi-operator product.

What is the difference between Brupass and Brupass XL?

Brupass is designed for travel within the Brussels-Capital Region across STIB and specified SNCB, TEC and De Lijn services. Brupass XL extends the valid area into surrounding municipalities. Check the official zone map and your exact stops before buying.

Can I use Brupass on the STIB bus from Brussels Airport?

No. STIB says Brupass and Brupass XL are not valid on line 12 when departing from Brussels Airport; you need an Airport2City ticket for that journey. A separate SNCB train ticket is used for the airport train.
